Casting functional objects out of metal comes with numerous occupational risks. Many of the early recognized exposures that were studied, and ultimately mitigated by industrial hygienists, came from Foundries. For decades, IH’s have worked to minimize risks associated with exposure to silica, asbestos, metal fumes, and oil mists, as well as various physical hazards found in the Foundry Industry. Even though preparation for the CIH exam included information and history of the foundry industry, few of us have been inside of a foundry. But did you know that the Colorado School of Mines has a functioning Foundry on their campus in Golden?
Join us as we take a technical tour of School of Mine’s Hot Shop. The Lab Manager will give us a tour of the facility, (including foundry, welding and glass blowing) and will also talk about the program’s history, notable incidents and Mine’s Commitment to safety and how they manage safety in specialty lab spaces. You can learn more about the facility and program at (https://metallurgy.mines.edu/hot-shop/)
The tour will be approximately 3 hours and attendees must be dressed for an industrial setting in closed toed shoes and long pants.
Space is limited so register soon if you are interested in this unique opportunity.
